An Amazing Saturday

Today I was truly reminded at how blessed my family is. Even though at times bills and college tution seem overwhelming there are things that you do that puts everything into perspective. Today, I went to a Fashion Show for Bowie High School in El Paso. Bowie High School is one the oldest operating high schools in El Paso, Texas and is part of the El Paso Independent School District. It sits on the southernmost South Central part of the city next to the boundary with Mexico. This high school truly is a softball throw from Mexico. I am quite sure that 99.95% of the population is Hispanic, the average household income for this zip code is $11,000. A friend is the athletic trainer for the school and started a program for girls called Bear Essentials. Today was there day to shine. The day began bright an early with Tri-State Cosmetology school during hair. Thank goodness in the down times people still stepped up to help. Dillards at Suniland Park provided clothes for the fashion show. MAC did their make-up. Thanks to the Junior League of El Paso we were able to keep ticket prices to $10 including lunch. Thanks to numerous friends who bought 2 tickets and donated one to the progam so a student or thier mother could attend. The style show was held in the Gym where famed Bowie 1959 Graduate Nolan Richardson played Basketball. Over 300 people came. The models received goodie bags thanks to Helen of Troy, an El Paso Co. that makes nearly every blow dryers, curling, flat iron and brush found at WalMart. The big gift the girls wanted were Flat Irons and Round brushes, so they wouldn't have to share one with the whole team, friends err school. The girls and guys looked amazing as they modeled their 4 outfits. Mothers cried when mija came down the runway in both dresses and high highs that they never wear. It was a great day and I will post pics soon.

The Hat Event

Only in Texas would a club decide to have an event and have everyone wear hats. Of course we would give out prizes for the biggest, silliest and prettiest hats. I am posting pics because they are truly worth a 1000 words.

Windy & Cold

Just when I think Spring has come to West Texas all the sudden I woke up this morning to the sound of the heater blowing and my little poodle buried deep under the covers like my personal heating unit. Thanks goodness I didn't have the a/c turned on in the middle of the week. For those who have never lived in the desert we don't have central air like the rest of Texas. Our a/c is what is commonly referred to as swamp coolers. In order to have your a/c turned on the home handy man must come out, climb on your roof and turn your heater off and then turn your a/c on. Once this is done you can't turn your heat on again til it is switched over. None of the flipping the little switch in the hall. The wind was blowing down off the mountain and the sun wasn't streaming in. What happened to our 80 degree weather? Somebody forgot to tell Mother Nature that it is now the middle of April. March is suppose to come in like a Lion and out like a Lamb. Right now we are still having the Lion in Winter. But wait what is this I hear on the weather tonight it will be back to the 80's next week. Thank goodness, I am running out of Spring Looking winter clothes to wear.
