College Now & Then

My daughter is starting her Junior year at Baylor, my alma marter. This year my college room mates kids are starting to college. Flash back 35 years when Kay, Cynthia and I moved into Ruth Collins Hall at Baylor. We drove down from Ft. Worth with our parents. It was an hour and a half from our house. We arrived with matching blue checked bedspreads. Cynthia brought a stereo, a new portable electric typewriter with an interchangeable correction tape. I bought a small black and white tv and Kay brought a CAR that had an 8 track tape player. I brought a new and expensive TI Scientific calculator. No more slide rules. I remember it cost over $100. They now sell these at Target under $10. We lived on the third floor of Collins and my daughter lived on the 6th. What has changed in the years we went to college and the time our children went to college?
First off, the dorms are still there. The rooms are small. My daughter said she wanted to cry the first time she saw he room. Cynthia remarked at how small the rooms are at SMU and TCU. She didn't remember our room being that small. I told her it was. Collins is basically the same however they have added many more outlets and internet to the dorms. There are no more curfews and in order to enter the dorm now you have to swipe you ID card. Guys are allowed in the fairly often and even Baylor has a coed dorm. Well sort of. Many coed dorms are divided by floors or even by sides. Even at Texas boys and girls don't live next to each other.
When we delivered my daughter to college there were no stereos only I-Pods. No typewriters only laptop computers and printers. Everyone's car came with a CD player. My daughter brought a small flat screen tv and the dorms even have basic cable. One thing that is not in girls rooms but is a huge thing with boys is game systems. Who is bringing what type of system. This reminds me of how we thought about stereos. Everyone has a digital camera there are very few pictures of our freshman year.
What had not changed they still gave them slime caps. Religion was still hard and she made amazing friends on her hall. Her freshman room mate who came from out of state is still her friend and another she lives with other people who lived on the Sixth floor of Collins.
